Tanjung Aan and Gerupuk are about as kind as a learning wave gets: a long, slow wall of white water over sand and soft reef, warm enough that nobody is thinking about the cold, and a channel to get back out without a beating.
Most people who have never surfed stand up in their first session. Not for long, and not well — but standing up, which is the part that decides whether you come back tomorrow.
The lesson changes shape. Instead of pop-ups and white water, it becomes reading the reef, picking the right peak, paddling into something steeper and not bailing on the drop. An hour of someone watching you surf is worth a month of guessing.

Kuta is a base camp for a dozen waves, and the right one on a given morning depends on the tide, the wind and your level. That knowledge is the lesson — the coaching is the rest of it.
